One of three Godolphin horses in the race, this one is trained by Saeed Bin Suroor and will be ridden by Ahmed Atjebi. He Looked a very promising 2 year old after winning his first two starts, but was exposed, despite running well, in his third race when well beaten by St Nicholas Abbey in the Group One, Racing Post Trophy over one mile at Doncaster at the end of the year.
He has had just the one race this season, finishing 9th in the 2000 Guineas, where he looked awkward and was very slow out of the stalls. Since then he has performed extremely well on the gallops, the latest of which convinced his trainer to run him in the Epsom Derby.

In this last work out a week or so go, Al Zir trained with an older group winner and looked very impressive when striding 3 lengths clear in such a way that suggests that the Derby trip will be much more to his liking. He certainly got his trainer excited, however, he was ridden by Frankie Dettori in that gallop, who has elected to ride one of the other two Godolphin entries, Rewilding, who has been supplemented to run in the race.
