Cavaleiro is the sole entry of Marcus Tregoning for the 2012 Epsom Derby, although the son of Sir Percy is very much an outside bet with bookmakers at this stage. The colt was seen five times as a 2-year-old last season, finally getting off the mark at the fourth attempt. He ended the season with victory over a mile at Chepstow and again over the same trip at Newbury.
Marcus Tregoning has won the Epsom Derby once before, with Sir Percy in 2006. Sir Percy is in fact the father of Cavaleiro which bodes well for his chances this year, although his sole outing of 2012 failed to impress the bookies.
Cavaleiro has made one appearance as a 3-year-old, finishing third at the Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes in May. He was nearly seven lengths back from the eventual winner, and fellow Epsom Derby hopeful, Main Sequence but it will be an advantage that he has tasted the 1m, 4f trip already ahead of Epsom.

VERDICT: A rank outsider with the bookies, Cavaleiro is the son of 2006 Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy but this step up in class looks a big ask.
