The Chester Vase Derby Trial
Run over one mile, four furlongs at Chester each May during the three day May Festival meeting, the Group 3, Chester Vase has long been regarded as a major Derby Trial and is the first trial that is actually run over the Derby distance.
Race honours have been reasonably well shared by some of the leading English trainers such as Sir Michael Stoute, but punters are strongly advised to look out for horses from the Aidan O'Brien stable as he has saddled two of the last three winners of the race.
The last horse to contest the Chester Vase and win the Derby was Quest For Fame, who was second at Chester before going on to win the Derby in 1990. The last dual winner was in fact the ill fated, Shergar in 1981.

Us Army Ranger was forced to work to land victory in the Chester Vase, as he fought off his stablemate Port Douglas to land victory in this Group 3 at Chester, and he should be able to use it as a springboard to bigger and better things as the season progresses.
