Irish Runners in 2010 Epsom Derby

2016 Epsom Derby - Irish Runners

The Irish have trained 25% of all Epsom Derby winners since 1970, including the last two and Aidan O¢€™Brien is likely to be responsible for training some of those in the betting for this year¢€™s renewal.

2009 winner, Sea The Stars who was trained by John Oxx is arguably the best of all the Irish winners, although there will be those who would oppose that argument by pushing the claims for the likes of the Vincent O¢€™Brien trained Nijinsky, the Triple Crown winner of 1970 and possibly Sinndar, also trained by Oxx, who also won the Irish Derby as well as the Prix de l¢€™Arc de Triomphe.

Vincent O¢€™Brien in fact, who was the former Master of Ballydoyle before his namesake Aidan, took over, trained six Derby winners in total, making him the most successful Irish trainer of all. That total however could easily be overhauled by the all conquering Aidan over the next few years. Aidan so far has had three winners, High Chaparral in 2002, Galileo 12 months earlier and last year with Camelot ridden by his son Joseph.

Other Irish trainers who have won the race, since 1970, are Jim Bolger, who won in 2008 with New Approach and David O¢€™Brien, son of Vincent, trained the Secreto to success in 1984.
