The Aidan O’Brien trained, Jan Vermeer first came to prominence when easily winning the prestigious Group 1, Criterium International at Saint Cloud last November. He had a number of potential Classic winning opponents that day, but he effectively wiped the floor with them, running out a 4 length winner.
He also won on his seasonal reappearance, taking the Group 3, Airlie Stud, Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on May 23rd, where he looked extremely impressive, never having to come off the bridle. The win earned him an immediate cut in odds for the Epsom Derby, for which he is now favourite with odds of around 2/1.
With the withdrawal through injury of stablemate, St Nicholas Abbey, jockey, Johnny Murtagh will almost certainly ride Jan Vermeer in the big race.
