Rugged Cross Betting
Rugged Cross is the only entry from the yard of Henry Candy at this year's Epsom Derby but he has performed respectably enough to be treated with respect by the bookies. The son of Cape Cross failed to make an impression on his first start as a 2-year-old last July but he was much better when landing a York maiden in fine style in August. It was something of a shock victory and Henry Candy will be hoping for more of the same on the Epsom Downs.
Henry Candy, trainer of Rugged Cross, is still searching for his first Epsom Derby winner but he does know what it takes to land a Classic at the Epsom Downs as he took the fillies Classic - The Oaks - with the brilliant Time Charter back in 1982.
Candy will be hoping that Rugged Cross can end his 20-year wait for a Classic winner on the Epsom Downs, particularly as his colt caught the eye with a fine run at Newmarket on his seasonal reappearance as a 3-year-old at Newmarket. The Cape Cross colt came third to the highly regarded Thought Worthy and Noble Mission over a mile and two furlongs and was installed at around the 50/1 mark for the Derby by bookies.

VERDICT: Rugged Cross, a York maiden winner last year, took third in a competitive race at Newmarket on his reappearance and should improve for the run. Each-way claims at a big price.
