St Nicholas Abbey - Non Runner
Trained by Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle, St Nicholas Abbey has been the long time Epsom Derby favourite, after easily looking like the best two year old around in either the UK or Ireland last season.
Winner of the Group 1, Racing Post Trophy last October, with subsequent Craven Stakes winner, Elusive Pimpernel, almost 4 lengths behind in second, this horse looked the pick of yet another outstanding crop of young talent that are available to O’Brien. However he disappointed in the 2000 Guineas thus tarnishing what had been a perfect reputation.
That said, he would still appear to be the number one from the ever growing number of quality O'Brien Epsom Derby entries for this year's race. The stable has won the two principle Derby Trials this year, firstly with Midas Touch in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and then with Cape Blanco in the Dante Stakes at York. Despite those wins, St Nicholas Abbey has shortened to around the 2/1 mark in the Derby market, thus confirming his stature at Ballydoyle.
