Epsom Derby Trials

There are a number of Epsom Derby Trials that contenders can take part in both in the UK and Ireland. It is important when having a bet on the Derby that you look at the fom of the horses running and inparticular the form in specifioc trial races run over the same kind of distance that the Derby is run over. Down the years, particular races become a common route for horse trainers to run their Derby hopefuls in preparation for the big race itself. We have listed these trail races in chronological order below and if you click on the link we also provide the latest results for each race.

10th April 2017 - Leopardstown - Ballysax Stakes - Group 3 - 1m2f

This Derby trial is one of the favourite warm up races for multiple Derby winning trainer Aidan O'Brien, run over one mile and two furlongs at the Leopardstown Racecourse.

14th April 2017 - Newmarket (Rowley Mile) - Feilden Stakes - Listed - 1m1f

The Feilden Stakes is run on the first day of Newmarlket's Craven Stakes meeting on the Rowley Mile over one mile and one furlong.

14th April 2017 - Newmarket (Rowley Mile) - Craven Stakes - Group 3 - 1m

The feature race of the meeting of the same name run over course and distance for the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. The Craven Stakes has become a really important Derby trial in recent years.

23rd April 2017 - Sandown Park - Sandown Classic Trial - Group 3 - 1m2f7y

This Derby trial is run on the Bet365 Gold Cup day at Sandown and has in the past produced winners of the Derby six weeks later. It is a Group 3 contest run over one mile and two furlongs.

1st May 2017 -Newmarket (Rowley Mile) - 2000 Guineas - Group 1 - 1m

A Classic in it's own right, the best three year old middle distance flat racing horses come together on the Rowley Mile of Newmarket and although not necessarily a trial, plenty of horses who feature here go on to race in the Derby.

6th May 2017 - Chester - Chester Vase - Group 3 - 1m4f110y

The Chester Vase is one of the racing highlights of Chester Racecourse's May Meeting and has produced winners of the Epsom Derby in the past. This Group 3 contest is run over one and a half miles around the tight Roodee.

7th May 2017 - Chester - Dee Stakes - Group 3 - 1m2f110y

The Dee Stakes is another Derby Trial run at Chester's May Meeting and has again produced winners of the Epsom Derby in he past. The race is a Group 3 contest run over ten furlongs.

8th May 2017 - Lingfield - Lingfield Derby Trial - Group 3 - 1m4f

As the name suggests, this Group 3 contest run over eleven furlongs at Lingfield is a Derby trial. With a little under three weeks until the big race itself horses can jump to prominence in the betting with a good performance here.

10th May 2017 -Leopardstown - Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial - Group 2 - 1m2f

This Derby trial has revealed some real flat racing superstars in the past. A Group 2 contest run over ten furlongs at the tough Leopardstown racecourse, this trial will give you a really good idea of what the Irish have to offer the Derby.

14th May 2017 -York - Dante Stakes - Group 2 - 1m2f110y

The last of the recognised Derby trials is the Dante Stakes run at the York festival by the same name. This Group 2 contest run over ten furlongs is the last chance for some of the Derby protagonists to get a run under their belts.
