Zawraq is one of the premier Irish contenders for the 2015 Epsom Derby, as the unbeaten Dermot Weld-trained star will try to build on a fine victory in the Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial Stakes and maintain his unbeaten record in the Classic renewal on June 6.
- 12th April 2015 - Leopardstown - Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial (Listed) - 1m - 1st
Dermot Weld's Zawraq bagged the scalp of the highly thought of Sir Isaac Newton on his debut as a juvenile at Leopardstown, but the Rosewell House inmate enhanced his lofty reputation on April 12 when easing to victory in the Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial and he is now a key figure at the top of the 2015 Epsom Derby betting.
In relatively soft conditions, the son of Shamardal breezed through the Listed event at Leopardstown, and eased three-and-a-half lengths clear of Endless Drama, and shaped as if there's a lot more to come in his three-year-old campaign for a trainer who knows how to sparkle on the big stage.
Weld has opted to send him straight to Epsom following that Leopardstown race and he will need to show that he has no issues stepping up to 1m 4f, but the manner in which he sparkled in the Guines Trial suggested that he could be a real class act and he could fly the Irish flag on Epsom Downs.
VERDICT: Dermot Weld's Zawraq was a sensational winner of the Leopardstown 2000 Guines Trial and if the Rosewell House inmate can use that as a stepping stone then he has to be a major player, as the step up 1m 4f should play to his strengths.
