Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial
This race is proving a fantastic yardstick for potential superstars, no matter if they go on to win the Epsom Derby or not. In fact it has produced three Derby winners, High Chaparral, Galileo and Sinndar, but it has a Roll of Honour that consists of some of the great flat race horses of recent times.
Those winners include, Fame and Glory, trained by Aidan OBrien, who won the race last year and then went on to finish second in the Epsom Derby before winning the Irish equivalent. OBrien also trained Dylan Thomas, to win the Derrinstown Stud Trial in 2006 and who then went on to win the Irish Derby a few weeks later. Dylan Thomas of course also won the Prix de lArc de Triomphe in 2007.
The great Yeats won this race in 2004 before winning the Ascot Gold Cup four times between 2006-9 as well as the Irish St Leger in 2007.
Clearly therefore this race is a very important trial and punters would be wise to take very careful notes of its outcome. The race itself is run at Leopardstown over 1 mile and 2 furlongs at Group 2 level in May each year.
